Sr. Engineer, Design - Mechanical

Job Duties:

  • Designs, develops, and/or redesigns new and/or existing company products and components through engineering calculations and layouts.

  • Designs injection molded and sheet metal fabricated components.

  • Participates in assembly and tests of engineering prototypes; and communicate with vendors to obtain information and assistance.

  • Reviews customer source control drawings, specification control drawings, and other applicable specifications to determine requirements and/or feasibility of product.

  • Performs preliminary and advanced work in development of Pro-E CAD models and final master drawings, adequate for detailing parts and units of design for new proposals and current designs.

  • Performs preliminary FEA on new designs where required using Pro-Mechanica in conjunction with HCL.

  • Performs preliminary CFD on new designs using Fluent in conjunction with subject matter expert.

  • Performs capacity analysis on heat transfer using LMS and other company accepted software and perform benchmark analysis of competitive products.

  • Leads the development and maintenance of Design Failure Mode Analysis for heat exchangers and produce tolerance studies.

  • Participates in engineering design reviews as required.

  • Assists with the preparation of proposal documentation, technical data (such as qualification test procedures), reports, and component maintenance manuals.

  • Serves as liaison between Engineering staff and all internal departments, including Purchasing, Quality Assurance, Sales, Production, Accounting, Metal Finishing and Assembly.

  • Interacts with vendors and customers on engineering design issues.

  • Checks design work of other engineering department members including layout, form, fit, function, materials, specification callouts, geometrics, dimensioning, and other output as directed.

  • Keeps supervisors advised of work status, work load, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.

  • Integrates environmental aspects into engineering design process based on environmental management system requirements.


  • Must have at least a U.S. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and three years of experience in Automotive/Aerospace Manufacturing.

  • At least one year of prior experience in the following areas:

    • designing injection molded and sheet metal fabricated components;

    • heat transfer and air handling design;

    • and Pro Engineer application.

  • Must be proficient with latest levels of Pro-E software.

  • Must have at least one year of experience in automotive or commercial Vehicle HVAC systems.

  • Must be familiar with Air Moving Design and Application, 6 sigma and Microsoft Software Modules.

  • Must have at least one year of experience in sheet metal and plastic injection design experience.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

  • Must be willing to engage in on-job training regarding Production, Material Identification, Quality, Diversity, Safety, 5S, Basic HVAC, 6 Sigma, Network Drives / Controlled Documents Locations Software, Microsoft Office Suite, Employer Quality System Procedures, and EHS (environmental, health and safety) training.

  • Must have permanent U.S. work authorization.

  • Work location on Blackhawk Road in Rockford, IL.
